Peeling the layers- Winter fashion on a budget!

Winter clothing for kids isn’t just about hefty jackets and woollen sweaters, it is also about comfort. Dressing your kid for the cold weather can be quite a task since you have to ensure they stay warm and comfortable. While a bulky sweater sounds good in theory, in reality, it would result in cranky, squirmy kids. Moreover, there is no point spending on bulky winter fashion wear which will only be used for a month or two.

The key to dressing kids for cold weather lies in layering. It is the art of combining different clothing pieces to keep one warm during the cold weather. The best part about layering is that the layers can be used all year round and the outfit can be adapted to different weather conditions by just removing or adding a layer. We bring to you everything you’ll need to know about layering for kids this winter.

Basics of layering

This winter styling trend basically involves three layers:

The base layer

This is the first layer of clothing and consists of a top and bottom. Since this layer is in direct contact with the skin, we suggest going for soft, moisture-wicking fabric. If you are living in a place where it’s not too cold, regular T-shirts, tops, vests, tights, and pants work well for the first layer. But we suggest opting for thermal wear for kids as the base layer for extremely cold weather.

Mid layer

The basic purpose of the mid-layer is to insulate. Go for woollen sweaters, fleece t-shirts, kids hoodies, jackets, and tweed dresses. Ensure the mid-layer piece offers free movement and can be easily removed if necessary. For bottoms, experiment with fleece pants, maxi knitted skirts for girls, and woollen tights.

Outer layer

The outer layer mainly protects your kid from rain, wind, and snow. It is important to go for a waterproof cover layer that’s breathable and has plenty of room for other layers underneath. Raincoats, waterproof parkas/jackets, snow coats, and rain boots serve as the perfect outer layer.

Accessories

It is important to accessorize to add a final touch to your kid’s winter outfit. Mittens, gloves, leg warmers, ear muffs, scarves, and hats are the basic necessities. Pick a few in bright colours and prints to jazz up your kid’s gloomy winter day!
