3 DIY scrubs for oily skin that actually work!

Woman exfoliating skin

Do you guys remember the Everyuth walnut scrubs that we were all obsessed with as teenagers? I’d scrub my face with it every night not aware of the damage it was causing to my skin. Back in those days, I didn’t have much knowledge about skincare or that there were special scrubs for oily skin. Thankfully, over the years I have learnt a lot about skincare and ingredients that actually ended up saving my skin.

To be honest, I prefer chemical scrubs with salicylic or glycolic acid that are much gentle on the skin than physical scrubs. But I know that some people prefer homemade skincare solutions as opposed to store-bought products. Here are 3 homemade scrubs for oily skin that are actually safe and won’t cause damage to your skin.

Pineapple and honey face scrub

A piece of pineapple

There are many fruits that have natural exfoliating properties and pineapple is one among them. But unlike lemon or lime, it’s not too harsh on the skin. Honey is a natural humectant and draws moisture to the skin, thus making it a very beneficial ingredient to use on your face.

How to make the scrub: Mash a few pieces of pineapple and strain to get the juice. Mix equal amount of honey to the mixture and apply it on your face avoiding the skin near the eyes and mouth. Leave it on for 3 minutes and wash it off.

Rice face scrub

Rice flour, milk, and honey

Rice flour is coarse enough to exfoliate all the dead skin cells without causing any tears in your skin. This scrub is perfect for those with oily skin. While the rice flour exfoliates, the honey adds moisture to the skin.

How to prepare the scrub: Mix a teaspoon of rice flour with half a teaspoon of honey. If you feel that the mixture is too thick, you can add a few drops of milk to the scrub. Use the mixture to scrub your face for a minute, leave it on for another two minutes, and wash it off.

Papaya face scrub

Papaya and honey

Papayas have a natural enzyme called papain which acts as an amazing exfoliator. It is also rich in alpha-hydroxy acids which are known for their anti-ageing properties. This scrub will not only help clear your skin of dead skin cells but will also protect it.

How to make this scrub: Mash two pieces of papaya and add half a teaspoon of honey to it. Apply the mixture on your face and let it sit for two minutes. Wash it off and follow up with a moisturiser.

These scrubs for oily skin will help you get rid of excess oil on your skin without harming your skin. Use these scrubs no more than twice a week. I suggest avoiding DIY scrubs with sugar, salt, and lemon as these ingredients are too harsh on the skin.

**Do a patch test with the scrubs before using them to avoid any adverse reactions. If you are allergic to any of the ingredients mentioned in the scrubs, do not use it.
